Macclesfield Market Hall Opens Its Doors After Major Refurbishment

One of Macclesfield’s most cherished town centre institutions has been brought back to life, as Cheshire East Council cut the ribbon on a fully refurbished indoor market hall, signalling a new chapter in the area’s ongoing regeneration.

The project was made possible by £2.4 million drawn from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which the council channelled into a wide-ranging overhaul designed to celebrate independent retail and locally sourced produce. New trading units, contemporary lighting, fresh flooring and a redesigned layout have given the space a markedly different feel, while new signage throughout reflects its rebranded identity as Macclesfield Market Hall.

A creative dimension was woven into the refurbishment from the outset. Two artists, Peachzz and Tom Edwards, were brought in to produce original works both inside and outside the building. Peachzz, who many locals will recognise from the popular swift mural at Macclesfield railway station, contributed a bold new piece to mark the occasion.

Accessibility was also central to the plans. New toilet facilities have been installed, including the town’s first-ever Changing Places provision — a fully equipped space for disabled visitors with complex needs — funded by a £110,000 contribution from Macclesfield Town Council.

The launch coincided with half-term, giving the opening a lively, family-friendly atmosphere. Children could take part in a treasure hunt around the hall, while local comic artist, Marc Makes Comics, ran drawing workshops on the day. Macclesfield Community ArtSpace also took up residence in The Corner Stall, a flexible pop-up unit available to hire on a daily basis.

Among the new businesses taking up permanent residence are Isle Deli, Taste of Home, and Maya Waffle Patisserie, adding to the market’s offer of fresh and independent traders.
