Macclesfield – a Market Town with a Market Hall!

Macclesfield – a Market Town with a Market Hall!

One of the many things that we do well as a town is get behind independent local businesses.

The high streets across the country are facing challenges (this includes ours), but here in Macclesfield we seem to have found a way to keep our town centre vibrant and relevant. The answer is independent businesses, run by amazing personalities who all live locally.

The list is too long so I’m going to focus on the newly refurbished Market Hall. Work was completed last summer to revamp the look and feel of the indoor market, to encourage new traders and to give the community a new food hall and some really gorgeous little retail units.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, come and find it at the top of the Grosvenor Centre or you can also access it from the back on Churchill Way. If you do come in from the back, be sure to take a minute to see the amazing murals that celebrate our town.

To give you an idea, here is a list of every one of the absolute rockstars who trade independently from the Market Hall:

Ali (me) – Makers at the Market

I’ve been here for a year, in partnership with 32 local makers. If you are looking for something a bit different, something handmade and unique, this is where you’ll find it. The people of Macclesfield have really embraced the opportunity to buy gifts that are not mass produced, that have recycling and reusing at heart and that are honestly pretty goddamn gorgeous.

Eugene – Takamine Guitars

At 82 years old Eugene is our oldest trader, and if we’re honest, the coolest. He helps people from all ages to explore their love of music, selecting their perfect guitar, and keeping it in peak condition for a lifetime. All Eugene’s customers hope to realise their dream of one day being as cool as he is.

Carole – The Little Salon

Carole’s little hairdressing business is bringing in people from all over! You can make an appointment, but walk-ins are always welcomed. With prices starting at £12.99 for a cut your bank account will thank you.

Kate – Crafty Tinks

Kate is a popular member of our little community in the market. She uses a heat press to put personalised images onto cups, clothing, and gifts. Follow the sound of her giggle and you will find her pretty little shop.

Dave – Barber

If you are a britpop boy and you need a haircut, Dave’s Barber’s will be like heaven for you. Sit back in his comfy chair and take in the ambiance, if Liam Gallagher was local, I bet he would.

Tony – Rock a Little Records

Tony’s shop is always full. People come from all over to see his collection of vinyl. Real music enthusiasts can fill their boots with the most amazing music and then literally buy the t-shirt.

Angie – Angie’s Den

Breakfast and lunch have long been covered in this little corner of the market. Angie has been here making a full English for Macclesfield residents for the last thirty-five years. Fresh soups, sandwiches and a hot meal every day.

Josh – The Hodgepodge Wizard

What Josh doesn’t know about games isn’t worth knowing. He runs board games nights for all enthusiasts of Warhammer, Parkade, Codenames, Pokémon and I don’t have enough room here to list them all. His shop is filled to the rafters and a dream for anyone who can roll a dice.

Sid – R&M Bags

If you are a native of our lovely town, I bet you’d find it hard to remember a time that Sid wasn’t here in the market. I think we have all bought a schoolbag, a purse or a suitcase from him over the last million years that he’s been here.

Alan – The Book Exchange

In a world that’s gone electronic – can we all agree that there’s nothing better than curling up with an actual book?! Alan has been rehoming stories for a long time, so come down for a browse, and escape into a preloved treasure.

Riz – Riz Electric

Riz is a whizz (do you see what I did there?) He will fix your phone, and sort you out with all the accessories you need to keep it safe and working until next time your toddler drops it out of the car window. He even says that if you come in and let him know you saw him on the This is Macclesfield website, he’ll give you 10% off.

Atiya – Eyebrow Attraction

Atiya is a favourite in the market hall for hair and beauty, she often has customers queuing outside because there’s nothing she can’t do with an eyebrow.

Stacey – Stacey’s Deli

A big favourite in our little community, Stacey’s deli counter has drawn the crowds for the last 16 years because she keeps quality high and prices low. There is such a good variety of meals available, served by her little gaggle of gorgeous girls. Running a deli is really helped when your husband is Mike of Royle’s Butcher fame.

Michael – Royle’s Butchers

When he’s not singing and playing the guitar at Takamine’s Guitars with Eugene, he’s providing top quality cuts for Sunday dinners, barbeques, week night spag bols and of course – breakfast bangers for Stacey’s Deli.

Hamed – Macclesfield Tailoring

Hamed got his start in tailoring in London more than twenty years ago, he joined our little market in 2009 and has been fixing and adjusting for us ever since. We like to think of him as the heartthrob of our gang, he agrees.

Vapes – Nicola and Gary

Selling vapes before vapes were even a thing, and there was no other vape shop in town, Nicola and Gary have been here with their wares forever. I bet you didn’t know they also sell perfumes?

Lavina – Little Bliss Asian Eats

Lavina and her family are originally from Hong Kong, they treat us to the most divine Asian street food, freshly prepared and lovingly served. This gorgeous family are really feeding me up with all the little morsels they bring over to me to try. Honestly heavenly.

Jonny – Isle

Artisan cheeses, made by real people in the traditional ways to maximise the flavours. You might want to celebrate British farmers, you might be trying to impress your friends with your cheese know-how, or you might just want to stuff your face alone in a dark room – there’s no judgement here.

Nick – The Brisket Shack

Our Nick spent ten years in the good old US of A learning how to smoke a brisket. And man, he smokes a fine brisket.

Ryan and Katie – Batter and Bowl

Ryan and Katie came to us in the summer, they make bows of fresh pasta but with the additional excitement of making them Japanese inspired. If you’re into a bit of fusion, give them a try! They also make the most divine little pancakes with breakfast fillings, my son had one every day of the summer holidays, so that’s praise indeed.

Rachel – Spuds4u

Spuds4u originated in Chester (fancy) and came here to the market earlier this year. With two massive potato ovens the flavour is unreal. Come and ask Rachel about the daily specials. I had an upside-down cottage pie potato last week and it changed my life.

Thea – Thea’s Accessories

Thea is the newest member of our little community, she specialises in accessories with a Japanese, Korean, Chinese vibe. Popular with people of all ages, she will help you with hair accessories, jewellery and scarves as well as a million other pretty things.
