Hidden Gems in Macclesfield You Need to Visit
I’m sure other locals will agree with me that there’s plenty of options around Macclesfield for a good day out. But if you’re not from the area, it can be a bit overwhelming trying to figure out where is best for whoever you’re with – whether that’s a family trip, a couple’s day out, or something a bit more adventurous.
So here’s a blog post to help lessen that overwhelm and narrow down some brilliant options for you, whatever you’re looking for!
Nature Seekers
Cheshire is amazing for having nature on the doorstep, and Macclesfield is definitely included in this. Whether you fancy a scenic walk, some wildlife spotting, or just getting some fresh air, you’re spoilt for choice around here.
White Nancy & Waulkmill Waterfall, Bollington

I think every person that lives in Bollington will know of White Nancy – it’s quite a key landmark of the town. But I thought it was also important to highlight another brilliant stop you can take on your walk up there as well.
The first time I visited Waulkmill Waterfall, I hadn’t been working in Macclesfield for very long, so this was quiteeee a while ago now – and I really fell in love with it. It’s one of those spots that genuinely stops you in your tracks.
White Nancy itself sits at the top of Kerridge Ridge and is a monument commemorating the victory at the Battle of Waterloo, with breathtaking views of the surrounding Cheshire landscape. On your way up, you’ll spot the cascading Waulkmill Waterfall nestled in Ingersley Vale, surrounded by hills, trees, and local stone-built cottages that add to its charm.
A word of warning though – some of the terrain is steep and uneven, so sturdy footwear is a must. But trust me, it’s absolutely worth it!

Danes Moss Nature Reserve

Those who know me know I love a nature reserve – anything naturel, to be fair – but Danes Moss is definitely an important one to visit. My grandad has actually volunteered on a moss almost his whole life, so I am quite frankly pretty clued up when it comes to bogland. Not to flex.
Danes Moss is an oasis of lowland raised bog and one of the scarcest and most threatened habitats in the UK. It’s covered with cotton grass, cross-leaved heather, and at least six species of moss, and is home to over 1,000 recorded species – including more than 60 that are protected. It’s also a breeding ground for the Willow tit, the UK’s most threatened bird, which has suffered a staggering 94% loss in numbers over the past five decades.
What makes this one extra special is the Save Danes Moss campaign. The site is currently under threat from development plans, and the local community has been fighting incredibly hard to protect it. Entry is free, and there’s a boardwalk running through the reserve making it accessible for most visitors. A real hidden gem right on Macclesfield’s doorstep.

And if you’re after the countryside vibes without clocking up too many steps, this one’s for you (especially if you’ve got little ones!).
Set on the edge of the Peak District and less than 15 minutes from Macclesfield town centre, Blaze Farm is an award-winning working sheep farm with a whole lot going on. They’re famous for their Hilly Billy Ice Cream, made right on the farm using milk from their own dairy herd in flavours like Double Dutch Chocolate, Turkish Delight, Irish Cream, and White Chocolate Mountain – to name just a few!
But there’s so much more than ice cream. Watch the cows being milked, see the baby calves, feed the hens, and take a stroll along one of the farm’s nature trails to spot the varied wildlife. In Spring, don’t miss the lambing shed where you can watch lambing live and even feed and pet the lambs – an incredible experience for little ones (and big ones, let’s be honest).
There’s also a tea room serving homemade cakes, a paint-a-pot studio for the kids, and breathtaking views across the meadows and woodland. And did I mention it’s free entry? You really can’t go wrong.

Jodrell Bank

As someone who wasn’t brought up in Macclesfield, when I told my partner I’d never been to Jodrell Bank, he was quite shocked – I think it’s a common visiting spot for locals but perhaps less known to outside audiences. So I can confirm, as a somewhat functioning adult, this is genuinely a brilliant day out for both adults and little ones alike.
Jodrell Bank is a world-leading deep-space radio observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an award-winning visitor attraction. Home to the iconic Lovell Telescope – the largest the world had ever seen when it was completed in 1957 – it’s one of those places that makes you feel genuinely tiny in the best possible way.
There are exhibitions, events, and interactive experiences throughout the year, so it’s well worth checking their website before you visit to see what’s on.

If you fancy doing something a bit more unique, a visit to The Viking Axe will be the ideal option for you. Founded by the Mayo family in April 2019, it’s unlike most other axe throwing venues because they use replica Viking era axes for as authentic an experience as possible. Their axe throwing room is even designed to look like a longhouse – and they have swords, shields, and helmets available, making for some absolutely brilliant photos.
The Mayo family are all absolutely lovely and super knowledgeable about anything Viking or axe related (or both!), so whether you fancy a fun group night out, a birthday celebration, or a slightly unconventional team building activity, this is a great option.
The Forest Distillery

This is a fun one for the adults. I attended a gin tasting organised by a networking group I used to be a part of, and let me tell you – it was a wonderful experience. The family-run Forest Gin Distillery originated in a 17th century stone barn nestled in the Macclesfield Forest and has since grown to include the Cat & Fiddle Whiskey Distillery and The Little Shop & Gin Garden.
They offer a range of bespoke events and experiences throughout the year, from gin tastings to distillery tours, so there’s always something going on. I’d say just make sure you pre-book a taxi for the way back – signal can come and go out there, and you’ll thank yourself for the forward planning once the gin kicks in!
